7月7日の七夕が近づくと、鎌倉八幡宮の境内のあちらこちらに、華やかな七夕まりや吹き流し、笹飾りなどが立ちます。かつては神事であった「たなばた」は、豊作を祈り、禊（みそぎ）をする行事でした。それが、織姫と彦星伝説や、中国から伝来した裁縫の上達を祈る儀式の乞巧奠（きこうでん）などと融合して、今日の「七夕」として定着したようです。この時期、源平池ではちょうど蓮の花が咲き始めていました。
