The National Art Center, Tokyo is currently hosting a compelling exhibition that dives into one of the most provocative periods in contemporary art history. Titled YBA & Beyond: British Art in the 90s from the Tate Collection, the showcase explores how British artists reshaped the art world during a time of cultural and social change.
Emerging in the wake of the Thatcher era, the 1990s marked a period of uncertainty and transformation in the UK. In response, a new wave of artists began pushing against convention, experimenting with bold ideas and unconventional materials. Many of these figures became known as the Young British Artists (YBAs), a loosely defined group that gained attention for their provocative and boundary-pushing work.
The exhibition brings together around 100 works by roughly 60 artists, highlighting the diversity of practices that defined the era. From painting and sculpture to photography, video, and immersive installations, the pieces explore themes such as identity, consumer culture, and shifting social norms.
Central to the exhibition is the Tate Collection, which is one of the world's most significant public collections of modern and contemporary art. Managed by the UK's network of Tate galleries, it spans centuries of British creativity while also incorporating key international works. The ticket reception for international guests is open from April 1, 2026 and is on a first-come, first-served basis. The general ticket price for adults is ¥2,300, plus a ¥330 QR usage fee.
