Towada Lake is a picturesque lake in the Tohoku region, between Aomori and Akita. The lake was formed over 2000 years ago as a result of frequent volcanic activity that created the crater that now makes up Towada Lake. It is the largest crater lake on the Japanese main island of Honshu. As part of the Towada Hachimantai National Park, Towada Lake is one of the most popular attractions in the area due to its proximity to scenic spots such as the Oirase Stream and Mount Hakkoda.
The area around Lake Towada is best known for its beautiful fall colors and visitors from all over the country flock to this hidden gem in the north. In spring, summer and autumn you can enjoy a scenic boat trip. For the more adventurous, canoe boats are available for hire.
In addition to the lake itself, hiking trails along the Oirase Stream are a popular option. The entire route takes about 2.5 hours and has its highlights in every season.
