大覚寺の東にある大沢池（おおさわのいけ）は、日本最古の人工の池である。元は、8世紀に嵯峨天皇の離宮に隣接して造営された林泉であったが、876（貞観18）年、離宮が大覚寺となった折に寺領とされた。よく晴れた冬の日、この池の畔を歩いた。薄氷が溶けたばかりの水面に青い空が映り、きりりと冷たい風が頬をなでた。朝の香りがする優しい風だ。そのまま小道を歩くと、梅林や竹林、広い草地などが広がっていた。朝日にきらめく池を巡り、さわやかなひとときを過ごした。
