京都御苑の北西の角を占める一帯は、近衛邸跡と呼ばれている。ここには広い芝庭があって、約30本の枝垂桜の大木が、濃淡さまざまに美しい桃色の花を咲かせている。ベンチに腰掛けたり、芝の上に座ったりしてお弁当を食べる人、おしゃべりする人。はしゃいで走り回る子供たち。みんな桜舞う青空の下で、春の日を楽しんでいる。近衛家は五摂家筆頭の家柄で、かつてこの地に屋敷を構えていた。現在ではその庭園のみが保存されている。地下鉄烏丸線「今出川」駅徒歩5分。
