常楽寺は鎌倉幕府の三代執権、北条泰時開基の寺である。1237（嘉禎3）年、義理の母の追善供養のために創建された。泰時は、評定衆制度や御成敗式目を制定した名執権として著名である。飢饉の時は自ら質素倹約に心がけるとともに、武芸に励む剛健さを合わせ持ち、人格的にも優れた人物であったと伝えられる。常楽寺は、そんな泰時の人柄を表すような端正な佇まいの寺である。仏殿の奥、向かって右側に、長年の風雪に晒されて丸みを帯びた泰時の墓がある。
