TOKYO RUN UP 2026

A stair-climbing race at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

If you've ever looked up at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and wondered what it's like inside, this November you'll have the chance to experience it in a completely different way.

For the first time, the landmark building will host the TOKYO RUN UP, a stair climbing race that challenges participants to sprint from the second floor to the 45th-floor observation deck. Taking place on November 15th, competitors will tackle an impressive 984 steps and a vertical climb of 202 meters in a race against the clock.

Stair climbing races, sometimes called stair marathons, have become increasingly popular around the world, with famous skyscrapers and towers hosting events that test endurance rather than outright speed. The Tokyo edition will also form part of Japan's national stair climbing circuit, bringing experienced competitors together with first-time participants.

The event is expected to attract around 2,000 entrants across a range of categories, including elementary and junior high school divisions, general and senior races, team and corporate events, plus a fun run for those simply looking to challenge themselves. Elite athletes will also compete for championship honors.

Whether you're a regular runner looking for a new goal or a visitor wanting to experience one of Tokyo's best-known landmarks from a unique perspective, this is an opportunity that's unlikely to come around often. Registration is open until October 15th, with places allocated on a first come, first served basis and participation fees varying by category.
