Sand and water are all it takes to create intricate sculptures at the Ashiya Sand Sculpture Exhibition, which is returning to Fukuoka Prefecture from October 23 to November 8. This year’s event takes visitors on a journey through the world’s football-loving nations, with large-scale works created by professional sculptors from Japan and overseas.

Held at Ashiya Seaside Park in Ashiya Town, the 17-day exhibition attracted approximately 83,000 visitors in 2025. Its 11th edition, themed “Beyond Time and Space: A Journey Around the World,” draws inspiration from the FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing international cultures and football landmarks to life through sand.

Unlike stone or wood, sand is a challenging artistic medium that demands careful handling and precise carving. Sculptors compact sand with water before gradually shaping the material, working from the top down to reveal intricate details. According to the chairman of the Ashiya branch of the Japan Sand Sculpture Federation, the fine texture of local sand makes it particularly suitable for detailed carving. Large-scale sculptures can take anywhere from several days to several weeks to complete.

Visitors can see the works in daylight before returning after sunset to experience illuminated sculptures and daily sound and light shows. Fireworks are also planned for the opening day and weekends, while food stalls, local produce, and family-friendly activities add to the festivities.

The exhibition runs daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. Admission costs 800 JPY for adults, with discounted advance tickets available for 600 JPY. Children of preschool age enter free.
