Japan Introduces a New Star Rating for Its Hot Springs

A new initiative to help travelers choose onsen based on water quality

Everyone has heard of the Michelin Stars that help diners choose a restaurant, but what about a rating system for Japan's hot springs? A new initiative aims to help travelers choose an onsen based on something that can often be overlooked, which is the quality of the water they actually bathe in.

The inaugural Yuchelin Awards 2026 will take place on October 26, when 21 hot spring facilities across Japan will be announced as the first recipients of the highest three-star rating under the Yuchelin evaluation system. Supported by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, the initiative aims to highlight the unique qualities of individual hot springs.

Unlike ratings that focus on accommodation, dining, or service, Yuchelin assesses the water delivered to the bathtub, including its mineral characteristics, how it is transported, temperature control, and daily management. The highest rating represents what the organizers describe as a “life-changing hot spring experience.”

The 21 facilities are intended as a starting point rather than a definitive list of Japan's best hot springs. From 2027, the program plans to introduce one- and two-star ratings as well, recognizing a wider range of bathing experiences.

For travelers, the new system could offer another way to plan an onsen getaway, whether seeking an exceptional hot spring or discovering a distinctive local bath.

The first part of the awards will be streamed online for free, with the announcement of the 21 facilities scheduled for 1pm on October 26. A second session will explore the characteristics of the recognized springs and the work involved in maintaining their water quality.
